It was Saturday afternoon and Nina's mom was going to take her to the park. "Honey," her mom called from the bottom of the stairs, "are you ready?" A little body appeared from around the corner at the top of the stairs. "Yes, mommy!"
Nina ran down the stairs and straight into her mother's arms. Nina's mom lifted her into a hug and twirled her around. "Ok, well let's get going, and then we can have lunch afterwards. Maybe if I find a good little girl I'll take her out to some ice cream." Nina exclaimed, "I'm a good little girl mommy!" "Then I'll have to take you out for ice cream."
Nina hopped out of the door and onto the front step outside the house. Nina's mother closed the door behind them and Nina ran through the yard to the sidewalk. "Sweetheart, wait for me." Nina's mom cut across the lawn too and put her hand out for Nina to hold onto. They walked down the sidewalk, or rather skipped, to the park down the street.
When they got there Nina pulled free from her mom's hand and ran straight to the swing set. Nina's mom rushed over next to her and plopped down onto the swing next to her. She noticed that Nina was having trouble getting started, so she got behind her and pushed her for a little while. "Pump your legs sweetie. You have to pretend to kick the air." Nina kicked her legs out furiously trying with all her might to do as her mom said. "There you go, now I'm going to let you do it on your own."
Nina's mom sat back down on the swing and started to swing along with her daughter. They were smiling and laughing looking at each other swinging. They started to slow down and Nina began to talk to her mom, "Do you want to hear a joke?" "Certainly my darling."
"Sarah, told me. What did the ghost ask the gardenias?"
"What?"
Nina paused and thought. "I forgot, I'm sorry mommy."
"Don't be sorry, it's ok. Maybe it will come to you later. Let's just have some fun now and we'll get going soon to get something to eat."
"And don't forget about the ice cream!"
"And of course the ice cream."
Nina ran over to the jungle gym and started climbing in between the bars. She dangled from the top for a little while, before crawling back down to sit on the side. Nina's mom came over from sitting on the bench and picked her up and gave her a kiss. Nina smiled and blushed a little, then gave her mom a kiss on the cheek.
They went and picked up some sandwiches and stopped and sat at a bench on the way to the ice cream shop to eat them. Once they finished they walked into the ice cream shop. Nina shivered when they first walked in, then ran to the display case. Nina's mom walked up behind her and asked if she wanted her to read off the types of ice cream. Nina looked up at her mom and with a smile nodded.
After reading them off, she asked if she needed to repeat them. Nina replied, "No, I know what I want."
"Ok, tell the lady what you want."
Once they got their cones and paid they went back outside and started walking home.
